Long Sands surf guide

Long Sands is a wide open west-facing beach located at Cape Neddick, making it a popular spot for surfers looking for a convenient place to catch some waves. This beach is well protected from the wind due to its northern headland, which allows for more enjoyable surfing conditions. It’s got a good amount of space, so you won’t feel too crowded while you’re out in the water. The beach is free in winter, but keep in mind that you’ll have to deal with parking meters and restrictions in the summer.

When it comes to surfing, Long Sands can handle swell sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can pick up swells coming from the NorthEast and SouthEast. You’ll find both left and right waves breaking over sand, making it an ideal spot for beginners and longboarders, even though the waves don’t tend to get top-to-bottom. The best conditions usually happen with a northwesterly wind, and all tide heights—low, mid, and high—can work here, which gives surfers plenty of options throughout the day.

Remember that you should be cautious of strong rip currents while you’re surfing. The beach tends to have several stormwater pipes that can be hazards, so it's wise to stay aware of your surroundings. Long Sands is generally a friendly spot for those just starting out, but make sure to play it safe and know your limits in the water.
