Lynmouth Surf Forecast Guide

Lynmouth is widely rated as one of the UK's finest pointbreaks, a long, walling left that winds down a boulder point. Its sheltered, northerly aspect keeps it dormant most of the time, so it only comes alive on a serious swell. When it does, walls can reel for over 300m. On its day it turns into a fast, hollow freight train with barrel sections; on smaller swells it settles into a slower, mushier, more forgiving ride.

When It Works

It takes a large westerly or a huge southwesterly swell to wake this point up. Lynmouth draws swell from southwest through west, with west (W) the best match, and works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Winter is the window, roughly December through February, since it needs that big, long-period energy to fire. Because it demands so much swell it stays quiet for long stretches, but it delivers a classic left when everything lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for a light south (S) offshore wind, with a touch of southeast also working. It breaks on all tides, though low tide is the pick, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an expert-only wave. The point is rippy and rocky and littered with obstructions, and arm-draining rips run through the lineup, so it is no place to learn. Shortboards, fish, and longboards all have their place depending on the size. Expect a packed lineup when it works, with surfers travelling from around the southwest and beyond, and the vibe can get competitive when it is on.

Access

Park in the car park below the cliff railway to the west of the river, or on the Esplanade to the west of the harbour; parking is paid. Getting in means a well-timed jump off the boulders. Restrooms and camping are available nearby.
