Overview
Mad River Beach is a sandy beachbreak stretching over miles of seldom-surfed peaks, breaking both left and right. It has a raw, exposed character: strong currents, rip tides, and undertow are all part of the deal, and winter can serve up big, heavy barrels.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from the west through north to east, with west (W) the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it's at its best when the surf stays small and clean. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to pick your windows.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. The break comes to life on mid and high tide, with a rising tide usually the better call.
