Overview
Majors Bay is a powerful west Kauai surf zone with long, often empty beaches and serious energy. The surf breaks over sand and reef, with fast rights possible on north swells, including a reef right near the end of the runway.
This is not a casual spot. Strong rips, heavy closeouts, sharks, and long walks back up the beach after a ride are all part of the deal.
When It Works
Majors Bay is exposed to both North and South Pacific swell, so it can have surf year-round. It works on combo swells, with north to northwest swells favoring rights and south to southwest swells favoring lefts. The optimal swell direction is north.
The spot is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Stronger swell events, especially in winter, can bring a lot of size and current.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is east. Calm conditions or easterly winds can keep it clean, and the usual east-northeast trades are offshore much of the year.
Low to medium tide is common here, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level spot. Paddles can be short and easy when it is small, but long and tiring when it is big and consistent.
Crowds are usually minimal, and the lineup can feel reserved. Keep it mellow.
Access
Beach access is easy: enter anywhere off the road, find a peak, and paddle out.
The reef right near the end of the runway requires military access passes. Farmland runoff can happen after significant rain.
