Majors Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Majors Bay is a powerful, exposed break on the long, empty west coast of Kauai. It faces open ocean and pulls in energy from both the North and South Pacific, so there's swell potential across autumn, winter, spring, and summer. The surf here is all about rights, and the whole stretch is known for serious power and terrifying rips, where a single long ride can turn into a long walk back down the beach. Strong currents and the chance of sharks come with the territory.

When It Works

The spot draws swell from south through north, with north (N) the best direction for its right-handers. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, running from chest high up to well overhead, and it can hold even bigger when a strong swell fills in. Consistency can be a little hit or miss, but that wide swell window keeps waves coming through much of the year. Expect heavy closeouts when it gets very consistent.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind. The prevailing easterly trades groom this coast clean most days of the year. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an expert-level wave that rewards surfers comfortable with power and current. When it's on, it handles just about anything, from shortboards and fish through longboards and guns. Crowds are usually minimal and the lineup can feel a little reserved, so keep it mellow and respectful.

Access

Getting to the water is easy: pull off the road, walk onto the beach almost anywhere, find a good peak, and paddle out. The standout north-swell right runs down the reef at the end of the runway, though, and that one sits on the military missile range and needs an access pass. Paddles can be short and quick when it's small, and long and tiring when it's big and consistent. The water is pristine most of the time, turning murky only after heavy rains push farmland runoff into the lineup.
