Mala Wharf is a popular left-hander that peels around an uneven reef opposite the disused concrete pier before shouldering off into deeper water. It's a favorite with longboarders and intermediate surfers.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through southwest, with south (S) swell the best match. It's a consistent break and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. The reef breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. It gets very shallow at low, so it pays to time your session when there's more water over the reef.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and it gets busy, so expect a crowded lineup when it's on. After heavy rain the water can be polluted by runoff from the stormwater canal, worth keeping in mind before you paddle out.
