Overview
Malibu Third Point is the farthest-out takeoff at Malibu, a right-hand point over cobblestone and sand. It serves up the fastest, bowly wave in the area and is known for speed-focused shortboarding.
On large swells, Malibuโs points can connect into rides over a quarter-mile long. Third Point is part of that classic setup, but it has its own faster, more intense feel.
When It Works
The spot works on south to west swell, with south, southwest, and west-southwest all in the mix. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
The main season runs March to October, covering spring, summer, and autumn. It is generally thought of as a summer break, but Malibu can also take west and even big northwest swells.
Wind and Tide
A northwest wind is offshore. The workable wind window is west-northwest to north.
Low, mid, and high tide can all be surfed, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This is a very busy lineup with a somewhat guarded atmosphere. The crowd itself is a major part of the experience, and Third Point is often dominated by a strong shortboard crew.
Best suited to intermediate and expert surfers. Shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, and bodysurfing are all used here.
Paddling is not usually too bad, but it can become a lot of work when it is solid, especially with the crowd. Main hazards include the chaotic crowd, loose boards, drop-ins, and paparazzi.
Water quality can be a serious issue after rain, especially when the lagoon breaches.
Access
Access is easy. Look for Malibu Pier and Jack in the Box along PCH; the point extends north of there.
