Mangamaunu Surf Forecast Guide
Overview
Mangamaunu is an excellent right-hand pointbreak along State Highway 1, breaking over boulders with the Kaikoura Range behind it. It has a Rincon-like setup, with hollow but not too powerful walls and long, cruisey rides the norm.
When It Works
The optimal swell direction is northeast. It also takes swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Big northeast to east swells can bring epic conditions, while south to southeast swells create more rips. Consistency is moderate, and the best northeast days are rarer.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is west. Cool katabatic winds can descend from the mountains, often blowing offshore in the morning and sometimes all day in winter, despite prevailing northeast winds.
A rising tide is better, with mid tide and high tide the main tide stages.
Local Tips
Mangamaunu suits intermediate surfers. Expect it to be busy, especially when the better days line up. There are other nearby pointbreak options, including Graveyards further out on the headland.
Access
From Kaikoura, drive north on State Highway 1 for about 10 minutes, cross the Hapuku River and pass Hapuku. When the road reaches the coast again and bends left, you can see the point peeling. Indicate early, pull off left, and use the free roadside parking.
Watch for traffic and trains when crossing the road. Camping facilities are available.
