Manzanillo (Rivas Province) surf guide

Manzanillo, located in Rivas Province, is one of those surf spots that really depends on the right conditions to shine. It’s a private development that you can only access by boat unless you’re staying at the nearby five-star resort. When you get there, you’ll see some impressive cliff backdrops. However, expect it to attract a crowd, especially when the swell is good, so be prepared to share the waves. While it's appealing to average surfers, the long paddle back out can help thin out the number of people in the water a bit.

The surf at Manzanillo can be quite fickle. When conditions line up, it can offer some solid waves. You're looking for a southwest swell between 4 to 10 feet (about 1.2 to 3 meters) to get those good rides, and it really responds best to a mid tide. It’s known for lefts breaking over uneven reef. Winds coming from the northeast work the best, and the waves can seriously range from chest high to double overhead. This spot is not just for advanced surfers; beginners and intermediates can have a go, but they should be aware of the rocky bottom.

While surfing Manzanillo, keep your eyes peeled for rocks and urchins, as well as the need to be cautious with the ocean's movements—turning your back can be risky. This spot is generally best during the spring and summer months, particularly from April to August, when more favorable swells roll in. Don't forget to bring your shortboard for this ride!

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
