Marang is a surf spot that has its own unique vibe, located in Malaysia. It features a mix of different breaks around the harbour area with some pleasant beachbreak options. While Marang may not be on every surfer's radar, it can provide some fun sessions, especially when the conditions align. The spot isn’t super well-known, which means it often flies under the radar compared to some of the more popular beaches in the region.

The right-hand waves at Marang offer a pointbreak feel as they roll along the curved wall of the harbour. However, for these waves to really come to life, a strong east swell is necessary, making it somewhat infrequent to catch good rides. The prime swell direction here is from the east, but it does handle swells coming from the northeast too, typically around 2ft (0.6m). The waves tend to break over boulders and sand, which can add a little variety to the ride. For the best experience, aim for low to mid tide, and be mindful that this spot is better suited for intermediate surfers. When the offshore winds blow from the southwest, the waves can really clean up.

On either side of the harbour, you’ll find some beachbreaks that can also be ridden, adding more options if the main spot isn’t working. Plus, the surrounding offshore resort islands like Perhentian, Redang, Gemia, or Kapas can be interesting to explore for a change of scenery and different waves. Just keep an eye out for tetrapods in the area, as they are part of the local environment and can be something to watch out for.
