Overview
Masachapa is a right-hand reef break that peels over a mix of uneven reef and sand. It rarely breaks, so it sees very few surfers, and everything has to line up before it shows anything worthwhile.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from the southwest through west, and it really comes alive on a solid west (W) swell. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, but it takes a rare, sizeable west swell to switch on properly. Consistency is on the lower side, so plan on waiting for the right window rather than counting on it day to day.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind and, ideally, a calm and windless day, since a northeast wind runs sideshore and pulls the shape apart. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Masachapa suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup stays fairly quiet even when it is breaking. If it is not cooperating, the nearby pier on the protected beach is worth a look.
