Overview
Matuu is a short, sharp barrelling right that breaks over live coral in the bay of Matuu. It is a genuine air-drop wave, so it suits experts who commit to the drop or riders who bring a bodyboard. It sits onshore most of the time, but when it lines up it becomes a real contender.
When It Works
Matuu draws swell from east through south, with southeast swell the best match for the reef. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so it needs a bit of size to get going and still holds through bigger swell. It can be somewhat inconsistent, so it rewards catching it on the right day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to clean up the short, hollow right. It breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave given the steep, sharp take-off over live coral. The lineup usually stays fairly quiet, so crowds are rarely the concern here.
Access
There is free roadside parking nearby.
