Overview
Mawgan Porth is a fickle, exposed beachbreak that only comes good when a clean, small swell is running, and is otherwise usually messy and hard to ride. The waves break over sand, with a left sandbar off the south end and a right off the north side. Both pick up a bit of extra push from a wedge coming off the cliffs.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from southwest through northwest, with west (W) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Because it needs clean, small conditions to be rideable, the tidier, smaller end of that range is usually the better bet.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east (E) offshore wind. The bank works best from just after low tide up to mid tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
It is a beginner-friendly beachbreak when it lines up. Just to the north, Bedruthan Steps offers more of the same, with a few more rips and gullies that can help hold off the low-tide close-outs.
Access
There is a car park with paid parking, plus a garage and shops nearby. On the beach you'll find restrooms, a lifeguard, and camping.
