Mbirimbiri surf guide

Mbirimbiri is a surf spot that offers some unique challenges for surfers. Located in a scenic area, this spot is recognized for its shallow reef breaks. Surfers need to be aware of the conditions and the tide, as getting caught in the wrong situation here can be tough. It’s definitely not a beginner-friendly place, so if you’re planning to hit these waves, make sure you’re up to speed with your surf skills.

The best swell direction for Mbirimbiri is from the SouthWest, but it can also handle swell from the SouthEast. When the swells come in at around 2ft. (about 0.6 meters), that’s when things get interesting. The waves are predominantly right-breaking, so be ready to paddle to your right. Mid to high tides are preferable, as the shallow reef can be a real hassle at low tide. Ideally, the wind should be coming from the NorthEast to create the best conditions for riding these waves.

This spot is geared towards experts only—if you’re not comfortable in challenging surf, it might be better to look elsewhere. The reef breaks can be tricky, and if you get caught inside, it can lead to some pretty tough situations. So, be sure you know what you're doing before you dive in at Mbirimbiri.
