Overview
Moledo do Minho is a river-mouth spot in northern Portugal and one of the region's standout waves. The river that marks the border between Portugal and Spain builds a sand bar here, serving up hollow rights that can be epic when the currents, swells, and tides all combine. Down at the southern end of the beach, a few reefs produce sectioney lefts that see far fewer surfers than the main peak.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from southwest to northwest, with northwest (NW) swell the best match for the sand bar. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there is a wide window between too small and too big. Consistency is moderate, and the rights really turn on when swell, tide, and current line up at the river mouth.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) wind blowing offshore. Low and mid tide both work, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Moledo suits intermediate surfers. Expect a busy lineup whenever it breaks, along with a strong local presence, so keep things respectful in the water. Rips and river-mouth pollution are part of the deal here, and the quieter lefts at the southern end are a good option when the main peak is packed.
Access
There is a car park with free parking, plus roadside parking along the beach road. Facilities are solid for a beach spot: restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, camping, a surf school, and a surf shop.
