Overview
Murcielago is a hollow beachbreak in Manta, Ecuador's surf city, and it's a favorite with local bodyboarders who throw down big moves on its punchy waves. Watch for the wedge that jacks up off the harbour wall, a peak the locals prize. This isn't the easiest place to start out, so it rewards surfers who already have their feet under them.
When It Works
The peaks break over sand and swing both left and right. Murcielago draws swell from west to north, and it comes together best on a northwest (NW) swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and with moderately consistent surf you'll find worthwhile windows without it turning on every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to groom the faces. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and the lineup gets busy with a bit of local attitude when it's firing. Out of the water, Manta backs it up with a lively beach party scene of bars and restaurants.
Access
You'll find restrooms, a lifeguard, and a surf shop in town. For parking there's a car park alongside paid and roadside options.
