Muriwai Beach surf guide

Muriwai Beach is a well-known surf spot located on the west coast of New Zealand, not far from Auckland. It's a popular beach, and you can expect to see some crowds, especially on weekends. It features a long stretch of sand and is notable for its scenic gannet and seal colonies, which add to the natural vibe of the area. The beach is easily accessible with good parking options and facilities, plus there's a big motor park behind the dunes, making it a convenient spot for surfers and beachgoers alike.

The surf here can be a bit hit or miss. It generally handles swell sizes up to around 2ft (0.6 meters) and is best with a SouthWest swell direction, although it can also work with South and NorthWest swells. The waves are primarily beach breaks and can come left or right, making it suitable for beginners who are just getting the hang of riding. For the best results, try to surf at low, mid, or high tide, coupled with an East wind to keep the conditions manageable. Do keep in mind that the peaks can be shifty due to the constantly moving sandbars, so it may take some time to find the right spot to catch a wave.

Muriwai Beach does have a reputation for being rippy and can be blown out at times, especially when the winds pick up. Many surfers often choose to head around the corner to Maori Bay when the surf is good, as it tends to have more defined peaks. If conditions are small, you can drive north towards Rimmer Rd on the beach highway, which can help you maximize wave sizes. This area attracts its share of surfers, but it's always good to check the conditions for the day as they can change quickly.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
