Nan Madol surf guide

Nan Madol is an ancient site located off the east coast of Pohnpei in Micronesia. Known as "Venice of the Pacific," it's famous for its unique stone ruins and surrounding beautiful waters. For surfers, it offers some potential but be aware that it requires a bit of effort to get there, and conditions can be a bit tricky.

The surf at Nan Madol typically works best with a southeast swell hitting the right waves that break over dead coral. Swell sizes around 2ft (0.6 meters) are manageable here. It’s a right-hand reef break that’s best during low to mid to high tide. Intermediate surfers will find a challenge but should be cautious due to the sometimes-exposed conditions. The preferred wind direction is northeast, but be ready for some variability based on the weather.

Getting to the waves can involve a bit of travel, and the surrounding conditions can often lead to blown-out surf. If you're planning to surf Nan Madol, an understanding of the local wave dynamics will go a long way in making your session enjoyable.
