Overview
Newport Peak is one of Newport Beach's rock-bottomed breaks, sitting in plain view of Pittwater Rd toward the north end of the beach, while The Reef breaks outside off the sea pool at the southern end. Sand piles up around a platform reef and all the swell trips over it, so the wave breaks with a bit of oomph and hands you tubes, hooks and cutback walls in one short package. It runs both ways, left and right, over a mix of uneven reef and sand.
When It Works
The peak draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with a northeast swell the best match. A northeast to east angle tends to bring the favoured lefts to life. It is very consistent, so there is usually something to ride, and it works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind to clean it up. The wave shifts in and out as the tide moves, breaking through low, mid and high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is arguably Sydney's most crowded spot, and the local talent runs deep with Tom Carroll among the standout names. It suits intermediate surfers best, and you can count on a very busy lineup whenever it turns on.
Access
There is plenty on hand at the beach, including restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school and a surf shop. For parking you have a car park with free spaces alongside paid, metered and roadside options.
