Newport Upper Jetties surf guide

Newport Upper Jetties is a popular surf spot located in Newport Beach. It features a sandy bottom and produces waves that appeal to both intermediate and expert surfers. The area can get pretty crowded, so expect to share the waves with other surfers. The beach vibe is chilled, but there's a local vibe that can feel a bit precious at times. Access is mainly via street parking, but make sure to check for street sweeping days to avoid any parking hassle.

The surf at Newport Upper Jetties can be pretty punchy, especially when the swell is on. It works best with S to SW swells, and can handle sizes from 1.2m to 2.4m (4ft to 8ft). Waves generally break over the sand, and you'll find both lefts and rights here. The best conditions tend to show up during spring, summer, and autumn, especially when there’s a good mix of southern swells. Wind from the north to northeast does the trick for cleaner waves, while tides around low to mid and mid to high are preferable for the best surf. It is a short paddle most days, but be mindful on strong south swells as the current can make it a workout.

While it can get exceptional during a solid combo or tropical swell, don't expect world-class every day. Be prepared for a steep drop-in if you decide to go for it. If the waves are good, it can be a lot of fun, and you’ll want to be ready. Remember that Newport Upper Jetties can get crowded, so don’t stress too much about it—you’ll still find some fun surf if you pick your times wisely.
