Newport is built around The Peak, a busy A-frame that peels both right and left over a mixed rock-and-sand reef. It is an honest, fun wave rather than a standout, with a clean setting and a minimal paddle to reach the lineup.
When It Works
The break pulls in swell from south-southwest through west to north-northwest (SSW-W-NNW), so it stays lit up across a wide range of directions. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, which lines up with the chest-high to overhead range it typically shows. Waves turn up through every season, from spring and summer into autumn and winter.
Wind and Tide
Newport is offshore on an east (E) wind and comes into its own when it goes glassy, with a workable wind window running from northeast to southeast (NE-SE). It is best around mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave is friendly to a broad crowd, from beginners to experts, and a shortboard or fish will both do the job. Expect a moderately busy lineup, especially on good weekends. Localism is present here, so paddle out polite; the resident elephant seals and the area's white sharks add their own quiet form of it.
