Overview
Nua is a heavy left-hand reef break and the most likely spot in the area to turn on classic lefts. The wave runs fast, hollow, and reasonably long over live coral, so it rewards riders who can commit to a serious wall.
When It Works
Nua draws swell from southeast through south to west, but it comes alive when the swell swings southwest (SW). It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, holding size across a wide window. Expect moderately consistent conditions, so it takes patience to catch it in form.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean up the face. The wave works on mid tide and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Keep an eye on the shelf as the tide drops, since it becomes more of a factor on lower water.
Local Tips
This is a heavy wave for expert surfers only, and the coral bottom leaves little room for error. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet, so you will often have space to pick off the sets you want.
