Nuluhaga surf guide

Nuluhaga is a surf spot that attracts its fair share of dedicated surfers looking for a challenge. Known for its impressive waves, it has a bit of a reputation as a heavy spot. The wave breaks over an uneven reef, which can make things tricky. This break usually works best with swells coming from the southwest, but it can handle swells from the south and northwest as well. It’s important to note that the right conditions are crucial here, so you’ll want to pay attention to the swell size and wind direction before paddling out.

The waves at Nuluhaga are mostly lefts that provide some serious adrenaline moments. It can handle swells of around 6 feet (about 1.8 meters) and will generally break when the outside swell is moderate to heavy. When the conditions are right, you'll experience heavy drops followed by some intense tubes, but be prepared for a shallow reef, as there’s not much water over it. The best times to catch the waves are when there’s a light easterly or southeast wind, and it's worth trying in low to mid or high tides. This spot is definitely for experts, so be sure you're ready for a serious ride.

The local vibe at Nuluhaga can be intense, often dominated by experienced bodyboarders and surfers who know their way around the break. This isn’t the place for beginners, so make sure you're prepared for a test of skill and courage. If you’re feeling up to it, this spot can deliver some memorable sessions, just remember to respect the locals and the ocean.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
