Overview
Ocean Isle Beach Pier is a long, south-facing beach break where the best sandbars set up near the pier. The waves are punchy shorebreak over sand, breaking both left and right, and a good right occasionally reels off the pier, especially on hurricane swells. It sits along one of the more swell-starved stretches in the area, so it needs the right setup to come alive.
When It Works
This spot has a narrow swell window, drawing swell from east to south, with a strong south swell the best match for producing a real wave. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and waves tend to run chest to head high when it's on. Autumn is the prime season: tropical cyclones through late summer and fall bring the best chances, with frontal activity keeping things going from late fall through winter into spring.
Wind and Tide
Look for north offshore wind. The beach breaks best from mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call. After about an hour of outgoing tide the waves drop off quickly.
Local Tips
It suits beginners and intermediates, and paddling out is straightforward. Just about any board works here, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards. Expect a fairly quiet lineup that can feel a little reserved. Keep an eye out for small sharks.

There's a car park with free parking, along with restrooms and a surf shop.
