Overview
Pedra Branca is a famous left reef in Ericeira, also known as White Rock. It breaks off the headland opposite the campsite over a flat, shallow slab reef with sand and sea urchins.
On smaller days it can be a fun but shallow lefthand wall. When autumn swells arrive, it turns into a short, sharp, hollow wave with square barrels up to double overhead. There is also a right in Praia de Pedra Branca bay to the south, breaking over sand and reef as a longer, fun wall for all abilities.
When It Works
Pedra Branca works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. The optimal swell direction is southwest, with usable swell from southwest to north. Northwest and west swells can also work.
The best season is September to May, covering autumn, winter, and spring. It is not the most consistent wave, but it can be excellent when it lines up.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is east. The wave is exposed to swell and wind, so clean conditions matter.
It can work through the tides when big, but mid to high tide is generally the better window. Low tide is serious here, with the shallow ledge becoming especially dangerous.
Local Tips
This is an expert wave when it is firing. Shortboards and bodyboards fit the wave best.
The takeoff zone is small, and when it is good it gets busy with strong local surfers. The lineup can be competitive, so it suits advanced, respectful surfers. Watch for heavy waves, the shallow ledge, and the carpet of spiky sea urchins.
Access
The break is visible from town and is reached by the piste road opposite the campsite. Parking is by the break, with free roadside parking. Nearby facilities include camping, a surf school, and a surf shop.
