Overview
Plaice Cove is a beach break in New Hampshire, and arguably the biggest rideable wave in the state, though it rarely comes together. The main event is a heaving right-hander that dumps onto a shallow shelf, backed by an unforgiving shorebreak that peaks in every direction, which makes it one of the more demanding setups around. Waves run both right and left over a bottom of sand and scattered rock. There are more reliable, higher-quality breaks nearby, including Fox Hill just up the coast, but the Cove still has its believers.
When It Works
The Cove draws swell from south-southwest through west to north-northwest and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It comes alive in autumn and winter, and on the right swell it can be a genuinely decent wave, but it stays hit or miss and needs the whole setup to line up. Winter sessions also mean cold water and air, so pack full winter gear.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind, with a workable window running from south-southwest through west to north-northwest. It breaks on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for intermediate and expert surfers, and a shortboard or a gun suits it best. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, with a core of locals who can get intense once the swell picks up and conditions turn favorable.
Access
Park and walk. A small lot sits along the beach near the break, but it fills up fast, and everywhere else is residential.
