Overview
Playa del Barco is a quality stretch of open beachbreak curving along an undeveloped part of the Uruguayan coast. The peaks throw both lefts and rights over sand, and there's genuine potential for quality rights here. The shoreline stays low-key, with few hotels but plenty of campsites. Just to the south, Playa Grande holds more empty peaks and some protection at its southern end. Northern access runs in through Chero Chato and Las Achiras.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with northeast swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it breaks consistently, so there's usually something to ride when there's swell in the water.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind to clean it up. The bank works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly beachbreak, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet even when it's working.
Access
There's camping right along the coast and a surf school on hand.
