Playa Kanoa surf guide

Playa Kanoa is one of the main surf spots on the island, known for its sandy beach that transitions into a rocky reef. This spot is popular among surfers and can get pretty crowded, but the vibe is chill as long as everyone respects the lineup. It’s best to check it out from December to April when there’s more action. While it can be inconsistent, there are days when Playa Kanoa serves up some good waves, especially if you're lucky with the swells.

When it comes to the surf, Playa Kanoa does well with northwesterly swells, but can also handle some northeast ones. It typically breaks both left and right over the uneven reef, which provides a good variety for surfers. The waves can be manageable even at smaller sizes, working well in the range of about 2 feet (0.6 meters). Low tide is usually the sweet spot to hit, but it can break decently at mid and high tide too. While beginners can have some fun on smaller days, it's generally more suited for intermediates, especially when conditions pick up.

You’ll find that the best wind direction here is from the south, which complements the wave action nicely. It’s a good idea to get comfortable with the different breaks as Playa Kanoa can serve up a bit of everything depending on the conditions. Just make sure to bring your patience and you'll get your turns in!
