Overview
Playa Negra is the main beachbreak at Cahuita, stretching along a seemingly endless black sand beach where the national park draws more trekkers and divers than surfers. Waves break over sand and peel both left and right, giving a relaxed setup that rarely feels like a dedicated surf town.
When It Works
Playa Negra draws swell from northeast through southeast, with northeast (NE) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent, so you'll find rideable days without banking on it every session. In small swells it turns into easy rollers that suit beginners, but a northeast pulse can push it overhead and hollow. If you'd rather ride a longboard, there's a fun left off the point at nearby Playa Blanca that works best at low tide and speeds up as the swell builds.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. The beach can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the beginner-friendly rollers tend to show up at high tide.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly spot, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working. Watch out for patches of sharp reef, and if the peak feels crowded you can head north along the long black sand beach to find more space.
