Playa San Diego Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Playa San Diego is a wide swath of coconut palm-fringed black sand beach southeast of La Libertad, on the road that leads toward Punta Roca and the rest of El Salvador's southeast coast. It's quieter than La Libertad and less touristy than El Tunco, and the sandbanks out front occasionally throw up brilliant A-frames. As a beachbreak it doesn't rate as highly as the famous points nearby, and closeouts are part of the deal, but it's a pleasant, authentic slice of Salvadorian coast that's worth a look, especially when the pointbreaks are on the small side. It also makes a good home base, with well-reviewed hotels and hostels and a variety of restaurants close by.

When It Works

The waves break over sand and peel both left and right, drawing swell from the south through southwest. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and spring and summer bring the most consistent surf. Water quality depends on the rains.

Wind and Tide

Look for north-northeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from north-northwest to north-northeast. The beach can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

Shortboards suit the waves here, and the beach has something for beginners through to experts. The lineup stays fairly quiet and spread out, though it can feel a little reserved. The paddle out isn't too bad.

Access

Access is easy: turn off the main coastal highway and follow the smaller roads down to the beach.
