Point Annihilation surf guide

Point Annihilation is a surf spot that gets its name from the powerful waves you’ll find here. It’s located north of Napier, and definitely can be a treat for those ready to tackle its intense conditions. This place is best suited for experienced surfers who can handle the busy line-up of local rippers. If you’re looking for a spot to test your skills, this might just be the right place for you.

The surf at Point Annihilation is pretty dynamic. The waves mainly break to the right and are known to handle swell sizes up to 4 feet (about 1.2 meters). The ideal swell directions are from the south, although southeast and southwest swells also work. You’ll want to aim for low to mid tide for the best conditions. When the winds are coming from the north, that’s when you’ll find the waves really firing. Just remember to keep an eye on those uneven reefs; knowing where to paddle out is key.

Getting there is straightforward. From Napier, you take State Highway 2 through Wairoa and then onto Nuhaka Opoutama Road, eventually turning right onto Waikokopu Road. Once you park at the end of the road, it’s a long paddle out from the ruins of the Waikokopu wharf to reach the waves. So, be prepared for a workout before you even start riding. Overall, Point Annihilation offers a solid challenge for surfers looking to push their limits.
