Overview
Polzeath is a popular sandy beach break with consistent, slow, intermediate-friendly walls and fun peaks spread through the bay. It breaks left and right over sand, with peaks in the middle, lefts to the south, and a reasonable right off Pentire Point when there is more size.
It is flexible for all abilities and surfcraft, and it is especially popular with beginners in summer. The setting is clean, with full facilities nearby.
When It Works
Polzeath is a consistent spot and is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Autumn is the main season, especially September to November.
Swell from southwest to northwest can work, with southwest the optimal swell direction. The beach handles anything from thigh high to overhead, and a few fickle breaks deeper in the estuary can come into play on huge swells.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is east. The beach breaks on all tides, though it opens up more at low tide, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
Paddling is generally easy, and the wave suits shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, SUPs, and bodyboards.
It gets packed with holiday makers in summer and is always busy when small and clean. The overall atmosphere is relaxed, though it can feel a little reserved. Watch out for crowds in summer.
Access
There is paid parking, including a car park overlooking the beach and a quirky car park on the beach itself.
Facilities include restrooms, showers, camping, lifeguards, a surf school, and a surf shop.
