The waves here are mainly beach breaks, breaking over sand. Poneloya works best with south to southwest swell directions, and it can handle swell sizes starting from around 1ft (0.3m). When the swell is on, you can find both left and right waves. It's worth noting that the spot has a moderate current, which can lead to some heavy rips and close-outs, especially when the swell gets bigger.
