Ponto surf guide

Ponto is located along Old Highway 101, nestled between the southernmost end of the Carlsbad campground and Leucadia. It's an easy spot to access, with parking available on the ocean side of the road. Over the years, this spot has transitioned from just another average beachbreak to a go-to destination for many surfers, thanks to the construction of two jetties by the Army Corps of Engineers. This development has helped create a variety of sandbanks that can offer decent waves throughout the year.

When it comes to surfing, Ponto breaks primarily over sand, and you can expect mostly beachbreak conditions. The best wave action happens with a west, northwest, or south swell, and the size can range anywhere from shoulder-high (about 2 feet or 0.6 meters) to 8 feet (2.4 meters) overhead. You'll find right-hand waves funneling off the south jetty during the winter, while the lefts breaking off the north jetty are best during the summer months. Ponto can be a bit shifty, with new sandbars frequently forming, so it can be hit or miss. The best tides are low to medium, and ideal wind directions come from the east or northeast. It's a great spot for those with intermediate to expert skills, especially suited for shortboards and fish.

Crowd levels at Ponto can vary from average to heavy, depending on the day, so be prepared to share the waves. The local vibe tends to be competitive but also grateful, as many surfers appreciate the unique conditions this spot offers. Just be cautious of the rip currents, especially on the dropping tide, as they can be pretty strong. Overall, Ponto is a fun option to consider if you’re looking for a beachbreak that has its moments.
