Pools surf guide

Right when you come down the hill on the Punta side of Rincon, you'll find Pools, a white sandy beach that offers some protection from the NE trades. It's not the most popular spot, and most surfers don’t really come here as a main destination, but it can serve up a few fun and quiet morning sessions, especially if you’re looking to avoid the crowds.

The surf here has its moments. It usually handles swell sizes from around 4ft to 8ft (1.2m to 2.4m) and works best with northwest, north, or northeast swells. You can catch both right and left waves here, but it tends to favor the rights more often. The bottom is a shallow reef, so you’ll need to be careful. The wind is better from the south, making those glassy mornings really nice. This spot is generally good for intermediate to expert surfers, so keep that in mind if you’re just starting out.

Access is pretty straightforward – just park by the side of the road, but be cautious since it can get narrow. The crowd factor is usually low, so you won’t have to fight for waves. Keep an eye on the tides, as lower ones are generally better. The best season for a consistent surf is late fall through early spring, although late summer can bring in some tropical cyclone swells in the autumn. If you have a shortboard or a bodyboard, you’ll fit in just fine here.
