Overview
Potato Point is really a cluster of beachbreaks that come to life when sand builds up on either side of the headland. The rights on the north side are usually the pick, and a handy paddling rip often sets up next to the rocks to get you back out. Jemisons left is the other draw here, getting sucky and holding a solid double-overhead swell when there's some north angle in it. For a bit more variety, there's a bonus righthander at Blackfellows, two headlands north, which leans on the sand to throw up longer, point-style walls. It's a relaxed stretch of coast with a good density of breaks, so there's usually something on offer across a range of conditions and abilities.
When It Works
Being sand-bottomed beachbreak, Potato Point stays fairly reliable and picks up swell from a wide window, drawing anything from the northeast through east-southeast to south. It's at its best on a straight east (E) swell. The break works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, giving you everything from mellow smaller days up to the heavier double-overhead sessions when Jemisons turns on. With that spread of banks and directions, it's a consistent option worth checking often.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west (W) offshore wind to groom the banks clean. The point handles most stages of the tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
