Overview
Praia Azul is a quiet, very consistent beach break with a long stretch of sand, several sandbars, and a couple of sand-covered reefs. It has fun lefts and rights, plus a right-hand reef at the northern end of the bay. There is also a slabby reef section with hollow but fickle lefts.
The bottom is sand with reef, and the swell can break over rock ledge. Water quality is generally OK, but it can suffer from agricultural run-off from the river.
When It Works
Praia Azul is one of the most consistent beaches in the area and is best in small to medium swells. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Swell can come from southwest to north, with northwest as the optimal swell direction. The best season is June to November, lining up with summer and autumn.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is east. Southeast and east winds are the main workable wind window, and the spot has some wind shelter.
Mid tide is best overall. The beach works through the tides, while the reef is best around mid tide, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level spot, especially when there is more size. Paddling is fine when small, but it can be a hard paddle out when bigger, and it gets heavy and rippy when big.
It can be popular, but the long beach has plenty of peaks, so there is space to spread out. The lineup is mostly chilled, with a somewhat reserved feel, so keep things respectful.
Shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, and bodyboards can all fit the spot.
Access
There is beachfront parking, a cliff-top car park, and free roadside parking.
