Overview
Praia da Ponta Ruiva is a once-secret left-hand point with a beachbreak in the middle of the beach. The point peels south over shallow rocks and boulders, mellow and fun when small, then turns into fast walls of more than 100 m when the swell picks up.
The beach has a couple of peaks too, with the standout being a fast, often hollow right that runs into the channel by the point. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocky reef.
When It Works
The spot is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It works with swell from southwest to north, with autumn, winter, and spring being the main seasons. September to May is the better stretch of the year.
Wind and Tide
The workable wind window is east-northeast to east, with east-northeast offshore. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
Boards from fish and midlengths to shortboards, longboards, funboards, and bodyboards can all make sense here depending on the size. Smaller days suit a cruisy approach, while bigger days are more serious, with rips and faster walls.
Beginners, intermediates, and experts all surf here, but the point is shallow and rocky. It is rarely empty when it is working, and the lineup can feel fairly competitive.
Access
It is still a mission to find, down bumpy piste roads, even if surf schools, beginners, and campervans now make it there. There is a car park above the beach. The roads can be rough on cars.
