Overview
Praia Grande is a large sandy beach and a big tourist destination for the Lisbon population. It’s an exposed beachbreak over sand, with lefts and rights along the beach. When it has energy, it can form long walls or fast, heavy wedges, with plenty of space to spread out.
When It Works
The beach is a consistent swell catcher, especially off season. It’s best in autumn and spring, with September to November and March to May standing out.
Praia Grande is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It takes swell from the north to southwest, with west to north-northwest also suiting the beach.
Wind and Tide
The best wind is east, with a workable wind window from east-northeast to southeast. Still afternoons can often turn onshore locally.
Low to mid tide is best. A rising tide is better, and high tide can get heavy with sections of shore dump.
Local Tips
Line-ups can get busy when the waves are good, especially on weekends and peak times, but there is room to spread out. Praia Pequena, the northern extension of the beach, often has quieter waves.
It suits a wide mix of surfers, from beginners to experts, and works for shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish and bodyboards. When the swell picks up, expect powerful waves, lots of duck dives and shifting rips. Watch for heavy shorebreak, crowds and rips.
Access
There is plenty of parking at the beach, but it can get hectic on weekends and in summer.
