Overview
Praia Grande is a long, exposed sandy beachbreak just outside Lisbon, and one of the more consistent swell catchers in the area. It hoovers up swell to form either long, rippable walls or fast, heavy wedges, with peaks scattered along the beach and plenty of room to spread out. It's a big draw for the Lisbon crowd and gets packed on summer weekends, but the waves really wake up off season. Praia Pequena, an extension of the beach to the north, often holds quieter waves.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from the west to north-northwest (W-NNW) and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, breaking over sand into both rights and lefts. It's best in autumn and spring, with the standout windows falling between September and November and again from March to May. Powerful, deep-water swells mean plenty of duck dives and shifting rips once the size picks up.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind, with a workable window running from east-northeast to southeast (ENE-SE). Being so exposed, still afternoons can bring localised onshores. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, though high tide can turn heavy with sections of shore dump.
Local Tips
This is a versatile beach that suits all levels, from beginners finding their feet through to experts, and handles just about any board, whether that's a shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, or bodyboard. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, especially at weekends and peak times, with a somewhat reserved atmosphere. There's still room to spread out along the peaks.
Access
There's plenty of parking right at the beach, though it gets hectic on weekends and through the summer.
