Puerto Caldera Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Puerto Caldera is a left-hand river mouth that breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand. The main bar sits in front of the bridge and turns into a faster, ripable left on bigger swells and higher tides. There's more on offer nearby: El Hoyo, a jetty wedge to the west, plus a left on the north side of the jetty and a rare barrelling left on an offshore reef. At the south end of the beach, Punta Corralillos is a fun left point that works on all tides. These waves sit alongside an industrial harbour, so the water is polluted.

When It Works

The setup draws swell from south to west, with southwest (SW) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it's the bigger swells that light up the rivermouth bar by the bridge. Consistency is moderate, so expect worthwhile windows rather than waves on tap. El Hoyo is the pickier option, needing west in the swell and higher tides to produce its sucky pits and ramps.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean things up, and that same east wind is part of what makes El Hoyo fire. The bar works best on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an intermediate-level wave, and El Hoyo in particular draws a big bodyboarding crew. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, along with some local vibes.

Access

Getting in can be tricky, with access running through the docks and security an issue. There's a car park with paid parking.
