Punta Aguja surf guide

Punta Aguja is a surf spot located about 150 km southwest of Piura, in the Bayovar region of Peru. This area features some of the last pristine beaches in the country, surrounded by beautiful white granite rocky formations and sand dunes. The beaches here offer stunning views of crystal-clear waters, which are home to dolphins, turtles, and various seabirds. Punta Aguja is particularly known for its unique water conditions, where the Equatorial Counter Current meets the Humboldt current, causing a noticeable drop in water temperature south of the rocky point.

The surf at Punta Aguja can be a mixed bag. The optimal swell direction comes from the Southwest, with additional swells from the South and Northwest also making for decent waves. It can handle swell sizes starting from 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and can produce both left and right breaking waves. The spot breaks over uneven reef and sand, making it decent for different levels of surfers, especially beginners. For the best surfing experience, aim for low to high tide and keep an eye out for winds coming from the Southeast, as these conditions create the most rideable waves.

This spot is particularly good for longboarding and is beginner-friendly, making it a great choice for those looking to improve their skills or just have a fun day in the water. The beaches leading down to Nonura also provide a couple of fun peaks, offering some variety to your surf session when Punta Aguja isn’t firing at its best.
