Overview
Punta Teatinos is a semi-right pointbreak that caps a long beachbreak about 7 km (4 mi) north of La Serena in Chile. The right-hander peels over a mix of uneven reef and sand, with good resorts, a golf course, and a lagoon that draws plenty of birdlife lining the shore behind it.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west, with west swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and the break stays consistent, so you can usually count on finding a wave when you make the trip.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to clean it up. The point can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly, approachable right that suits beginners, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet. Keep an eye on the size, though: when the A-frames jump to overhead, the paddle out gets heavy, so pick your moments as the swell builds.
