Overview
Putsborough is a popular beachbreak at the southern end of Woolacombe Sands, with reasonable peaks over sand and lefts and rights. It can throw up decent banks, and in solid swell it can get hollow. Baggy Point gives it shelter from southerly and southwesterly winds, though the waves are often a foot or two smaller than nearby exposed spots.
When It Works
The optimal swell direction is west. It also takes southwest to northwest swell and needs bigger swells, with autumn and winter the main seasons.
Putsborough is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It can be thigh high to overhead, and paddling is generally okay, though it can get heavy going when it is big.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is east. Southeast winds can also be good here, and Baggy Point helps protect the beach from south and southwest winds.
It works on all tides, but the surf can disappear at high tide. A rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly spot with options for shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, SUPs and bodyboards. Crowds are moderate and it can get busy, but usually manageable. Bring a relaxed approach, as the lineup can be a little reserved.
Watch for rips by the point when it is big. There can also be occasional rocks at high tide.
Access
There is a car park with paid parking above the beach, plus restrooms, showers and camping. Parking overlooks the waves, with more parking behind the cafรฉ.
The road down is narrow and windy, and the lane is very narrow and steep. It can be slippery when wet.
