Rainbow Rocks surf guide

Rainbow Rocks is a surf spot located about 3 miles (5 km) north of Brookings, right across the cove from the Rainbow Rocks condo complex. This area features a sand beach interspersed with rocks, making it a unique place to catch some waves. It’s generally a low-key spot and can be a decent option for surfers looking for a change of pace from the more crowded beaches.

The waves at Rainbow Rocks can be shaped by northwestern swells, and you’ll often find rideable surf when the swell comes from the south or northwest, especially on days with glassy conditions or light northeast winds. It handles swell sizes starting from 1 ft (0.3 m), and the breaks are over sand, providing both lefts and rights. The best time to surf here is during low to mid tide, making it suitable for intermediate surfers looking to improve their skills.

If you’re planning a session, it’s a good idea to do a dawn patrol before the wind picks up. The environment can be a bit tricky to access, as there’s a scramble involved getting down to the beach, but it’s usually worth the effort for some decent waves.
