Redondo Beach Breakwater Surf Forecast Guide

Redondo Beach Breakwater is one of LA's few big-wave arenas, a fast, walled left that breaks across the front of the King Harbor breakwall. The wave refracts and amplifies off the jetty, spinning out long, fast lefts that end in a heavy shorebreak. It can be fun on smaller days, but it really comes alive when the swell turns big and powerful.

When It Works

The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with west (W) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, holding all the way up to triple-overhead when sizeable west and northwest swells line up. Mid to long-period swells from 13 seconds and up bring out the best of it. Expect the most action through autumn, winter, and spring. It is moderately consistent, and a good wave when the setup comes together.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind. The spot works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. High tides tend to throw up bad backwash, so lower water is the safer bet.

Local Tips

This is an expert-only wave. Guns and big-wave boards are a must, though shortboards, skimboards, and bodysurfers all get their turns here. There is a lot of moving water and strong currents, and the wave finishes in severe shorepound, so time your entry off the break-wall carefully and paddle out at the rip beside the breakwater. Expect a busy lineup that thins as the swell builds, with a generally friendly atmosphere.

Access

Park at the King Harbor lot, with free and roadside parking nearby. There is a surf shop close at hand.
