Overview
Ribeira d'Ilhas is a high-quality right-hand reef in a cliff-lined sandy bay, with long walls that can run for over 200 m on good days. The wave breaks over uneven reef and sand-covered reef, and it has a flexible setup that often has something worth surfing.
Pontinha is the northern outside section. It is ridden less often, works best in medium swells, and only occasionally links with the main break.
When It Works
The optimal swell direction is northwest. The broader swell window runs from southwest through west-northwest to north-northwest.
Ribeira d'Ilhas is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, from small waves up to double overhead plus. The best season is September to May, with spring, autumn, and winter the main surf seasons.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is east. A workable wind window runs from north-northeast through east to south-southeast.
It can break through all tides, and a rising tide is better. Mid tide is optimal.
Local Tips
It can suit beginners, intermediates, and experts, depending on the day. Shortboards, fish, longboards, and bodyboards all make sense here.
The paddle out is usually easy: launch from the beach south of the wave and paddle around rather than through the lineup.
Ribeira d'Ilhas is popular and can get very crowded, especially when it is busy and at its best. Watch for crowds, some rips, urchins, and water that is not very clean.
Access
Access is easy, with parking at the beach, a car park with free parking, and roadside parking.
Facilities are good, with restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, surf school, surf shop, café, and beach bar.
