Ribeira d'Ilhas Surf Forecast Guide

Ribeira d'Ilhas is a high-quality right-hand reef and one of the most versatile setups around, with a sand-covered reef that almost always has something worth paddling out for. On its day it throws out a long, winding wall that can reel for well over 200 m, holding shape from just over knee high all the way to double overhead and beyond. Pontinha, the less-frequently-ridden outside section on the northern edge, is a separate right that comes into its own in medium swells and only occasionally links through to the main break.

When It Works

The reef draws swell from southwest through west-northwest to north-northwest, and it fires best on a northwest swell. It stays rideable across a wide band, working from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, which is a big part of why there's so often something on offer here. It's a consistent spot, and the prime window runs September to May, through autumn, winter, and into spring.

Wind and Tide

Look for east offshore wind, with a workable wind window stretching from north-northeast through east to south-southeast. The reef breaks through all tides, so you're rarely locked out, though mid tide is the pick and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

The wave suits just about everyone, from beginners finding their feet to experts, and it takes anything from a shortboard or fish to a longboard or bodyboard. It's a well-known contest site, so expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on. Keep an eye out for rips and urchins on the reef, and be aware the water isn't always the cleanest.

Access

Getting in is easy, with a car park offering free parking alongside roadside spots. Facilities are good: restrooms, showers, a surf school and surf shop, camping, and a lifeguard. For the paddle out, launch from the beach to the south and paddle around the lineup rather than straight through it.
