Right Point Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Right Point is a long right-hand point about 10 miles south of Osbourne Head, running roughly a mile over a bottom of cobblestone and shelf rock. It breaks in three distinct sections, and on a big day those sections link up into a ride considerably longer than California's Rincon. When the wind and swell line up, it's one of the better waves around.

When It Works

The point picks up swell from east through south to south-southwest, and south and southeast swells are the pick of that window. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, with chest-high to overhead surf the usual result when it's on. This is a storm-driven setup: tropical cyclones through late summer and fall, then frontal systems from late fall through winter and into spring, so autumn and winter are the seasons to watch.

Wind and Tide

Look for west-northwest offshore wind, though anything in the west-southwest to north-northwest window is workable. Mid tide is the call, and a rising tide is generally the better half of it.

Local Tips

Bring a shortboard, and expect intermediate-level surf. The paddle can be real work once there's size in it. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, with a friendly enough crowd in the water. Winter temperatures get cold, so come dressed for it.
