Rockaway surf guide

Rockaway is the closest surfing beach to New York City. It's known for its beach breaks, which can provide some fun sessions if the conditions are right. Crowds can be a challenge here, often making it a bit tough to find your space in the water. The area attracts surfers of various skill levels, but be prepared for some competition out there.

The surf here is generally average, needing a solid swell to really get going. On a good day, East swells can bring some decent lefts and rights, but overall, you might find the waves a bit underwhelming unless the swell is sizable. The beach can handle swells as small as 2 feet (about 0.6 meters), and it's best to surf during low, mid, or high tide. When the wind comes from the Northwest, the waves tend to shape up nicely, so keep an eye on the weather.

For beginners, Rockaway can be a decent spot to practice, especially when the waves are smaller. The sandy bottom makes for a safer experience, but be ready for the hustle in the lineup. Also, parking is not the easiest, so you might have to walk a bit if you're driving in. Keep in mind that the vibe can get a little aggressive, similar to what you'd expect from a cab driver in the city!
